Alviro has swapped Somerset for Sri Lanka for his latest blog.

‘I said goodbye to my Somerset team mates at Heathrow and flew from England out to Dubai where I met up with three of my team mates, Dean Elgar and the two new faces to our test squad, Stiaan Van Zyl and Dane Piedt.

From there we caught a flight to Colombo and arrived at about 9am the morning of the 12th July.

We had to spend the day and first night in Colombo, as our one-day team was playing the third One Day International in Hambantota where South Africa clinched a historic series victory.

The following day we drove to Galle where we met up with the rest of the test squad. We stayed at a beautiful hotel right on the beach, where the sea views from my room were absolutely breathtaking.

Galle itself is a wonderful historic place, and the locals are very kind and generous human beings, despite the fact that they don’t have very much. Before the start of the series we knew that it was going to be really tough and hard fought and so it proved to be in the First Test

Winning the toss is absolutely key in Sri-Lanka, or so it seems. We won the toss and batting first, my new opening partner Dean Elgar and myself got off to a steady start with a 70 odd run partnership before we eventually posted 450 plus.

That first innings set the game up, and so it turned out to be as we went on to win the first of the two match series by 153 runs

We now travel to Colombo to play the Second Test, and hopefully when I write again, it will be about us being the first South African team to win a series in Sri-Lanka.”
